AFTER LEAVING RHODE ISLAND WE CONTINUED UP THE SCENIC ROUTE ON THE EASTERN SHORELINE.THE SOUTHERN COAST IS LINED WITH BEAUTIFUL SANDY BEACHES AND COVES.MAINE IS AS LARGE AS ALL THE OTHER NEW ENGLAND STATES PUT TOGETHER.IT IS 320 MILES LONG AND 210 MILES WIDE TOTAL AREA OF 33,215 SQ.MILES,6000 LAKES AND PONDS,32,000 MILES OF RIVERS AND STREAMS,17 MILLION ACRES OF FOREST LAND 3,478 MILES OF COASTLINE AND 2000 ISLANDS AND WE NEVER SAW A SINGLE "MOOSE".THE SOUTH COAST OF MAINE IS KNOWN AS THE "GATEWAY TO MAINE" AND IS BEST KNOWN FOR ITS QUIET ELEGANCE OF KENNEBUNK AND OGUNQUIT AND PORTLAND'S "OLD PORT"DISTRICT.LIGHTHOUSES ARE A LARGE PART IN THE HISTORY THERE ARE 62 IN MAINE ALONE.BLUEBERRIES GALORE--BLUE BERRY PIE,PANCAKES,JAM,JELLY,DOUGHNUTS AND ICE CREAM.AT THE FIRST CAMPGROUND WE STAYED IN ---
YOU CAN PICK YOUR OWN AND THEY WILL BAKE THEM IN A PIE AND DELVER IT TO YOUR SITE OR PUT THEM IN YOUR PANCAKES AT BREAKFAST---REALLY COOL.AND THERE IS "LOBSTER"!!!!!!LOBSTER POUNDS EVERYWHERE----PICK YOUR LOBSTER AND DROP IT IN TO BOIL.FOR $13.99--A 1 1/4 LB. TO A 2 LB.SLAW,FRIES,CORN ON COB AND FRESH ROLLS AND A SLICE OF BLUEBERRY PIE. WE HAD LOBSTER EVERYDAY.THEN THERE WERE THE CLAM SHACKS--$1.00 A CUP OF THE BEST CLAM CHOWDER IN THE WORLD.THE RIDE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL UP THE COAST THE ROADWAYS WERE LINED WITH WILD FLOWERS EVERYWHERE AND MANY PICK AND CUT STOPS.YOU GET YOUR SCISSORS,GLOVES AND BUCKET AND PICK AND CUT YOUR OWN FLOWERS FOR $4.00.SO WE HAD FRESH FLOWERS ON THE TABLE EVERYDAY IT WAS SO NICE.WELLS BEACH AND OLD ORCHARD BEACH
WERE OUR FAVORITE--OLD ORCHARD BEACH HAD AN OLD FERRIS WHEEL RIGHT ON THE BEACH--WHEN YOU GO UP---WHAT A VIEW.WE STOPPED IN BUCKSPORT TO GET A CLOSE UP VIEW OF FT.KNOX MAINES LARGEST HISTORIC FORT AND MADE OF GRANITE AND THE PENOBSCOT NARROWS OBSERVATORY BRIDGE.IT IS 42 STORIES--420 FT.TALL ---AGAIN WHAT A VIEW.THEN WE ARRIVED IN BAR HARBOR----MT DESERT ISLAND---WE ARE OVERWHELMED WITH THE BEAUTY  AND ALL THE NATURE AND THE ACADIA NATIONAL FOREST HOLDS THE SPECTACULAR VIEWS ATOP MT.CADILLAC 1580 FT UP.I CRIED AS WE DROVE UP THE MOUNTAIN SIDE THE VIEW WAS UNBELIEVABLE.WE SPENT MOST OF OUR TRIP HERE ON MT.DESERT ISLAND THERE WERE MANY SITES TO SEE.NORTHEAST HARBOR WAS ONE OF THE HARBORS WE WOULD HAVE BOATED TO ---IT WAS QUITE NICE BUT ALL THE MOORINGS WERE FULL AND WE REALLY ENJOYED THE VISIT BY LAND.WE ALSO EXPLORED SOUTHWEST HARBOR,BASS HARBOR AND OF COURSE BAR HARBOR.THERE IS THE "SANDBAR"THAT IS QUITE A SIGHT TO SEE.AT LOW TIDE YOU CAN PARK ON THE BAR AND WALK ACROSS TO THE ISLAND---BUT----DON'T TAKE LONG BECAUSE THE TIDE COMES IN QUICK AND YOU CAN GET STUCK AND YOUR VEHICLE FLOODED.WE HIKED AROUND THE JORDON POND TO THE "BUBBLE"WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOUNTAINS YOU CAN HIKE TO THE TOP.WE ALSO CLIMBED THE "OTTER CLIFFS" AND WALKED THE NATURAL ROCK FORMED "SEAWALL" TO THUNDER HOLE---WHICH IS SO COOL----A HUGE HOLE CARVED INTO THE ROCK WALL AND THE WAVES AND WATER CRASH INTO IT MAKING A THUNDEROUS NOISE---WHAT A SIGHT TO SEE.IT WOULD TAKE FOREVER TO MENTION ALL THE SIGHTS AND WONDERS---TWO WEEKS WAS DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH TIME---MAINE AND THE NEW ENGLAND STATES ARE A "MUST SEE AND DO" AND BE ABLE TO SPEND LOTS OF TIME EXPLORING,HIKING AND KAYAKING.WE SAD TO GO BUT MUST RETURN TO "BLUE DOLPHIN"AND CONTINUE OUR CHESAPEAKE TRIP AND PREPARE TO RETURN TO FLORIDA IN OCTOBER.OUR NEXT BLOG WILL BE IN A COUPLE WEEKS WHEN WE ARE IN BALTIMORE AND STARTING HOME.
