CHARLESTON,S.C. WAS FOUNDED IN 1670 BY THE BRITISH.CHARLESTON IS A CITY OF PASTEL HOUSES AND TIDY BRICK WALLED GARDENS BEHIND LACY IRON GATES.YOU PASS FORT SUMTER AS YOU FOLLOW THE SHIPPING LANE  FROM CHARLESTON HARBOR THIS IS WHERE THE  FIRST SHOTS OF THE CIVIL WAR WERE FIRED.THE FORT UNDERWENT A TWO YEAR SIEGE BY UNION FORCES UNTIL IT WAS FINALLY ABANDONED IN 1865.AS WE APPROACHED THE ENTRANCE TO THE INTERCOASTAL WATERWAY THERE WAS A LARGE TRAWLER AGROUND AND ON ITS SIDE.AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT WAS AN OLD ABANDONED BOAT BUT AS WE GOT CLOSER IT WAS A TRAWLER FROM TEXAS WITH PEOPLE ON BOARD--THEY MISSED THE RANGE MARKER AND PASS ED BETWEEN THE WRONG NAVIGATIONAL AID AND HIT ROCK AND BOTTOM.IT WAS ALSO LOW TIDE AND THE TIDE WOULD STILL BE GOING OUT FOR ANOTHER 1-2 HRS.WE TRIED TO CONTACT THEM BY RADIO NO ANSWER THEN WE HEARD BOAT US TO THE RESCUE.IT TOOK THREE TOW BOATS TO PULL THEM FREE AND ESCORT THEM TO THE MARINA SINCE THEY LOST POWER IN THE SEVERE GROUNDING.ALL ABOARD WERE SAFE BUT SHAKEN.WE HAD RESERVATIONS TO STAY AT THE ISLE OF PALMS  A BARRIER ISLAND AND HOME TO ONE OF THE GREAT GOLF COURSES "WILD DUNES".WE VISITED THE "BONE-YARD"BEACH FRONT WITH OLD SKELETONS AND STUMPS LEFT AS A RESULT OF EROSION AND BLEACHED OUT BY THE SUN.WE HAD A BEACH SIDE COOKOUT PREPARED AND SERVED ON THE BEACH---LOW COUNTRY BOIL AND FELT SO PRIVILEGED TO VIEW THE SALT MARSHES AND UNSPOILED DUNES.THERE ARE SEVERAL FERRIES THAT RUN  FREQUENTLY FOR SEVERAL FAMILIES LIVE ON THE MANY BARRIER ISLANDS AND HAVE TO BE FERRIED FOR SUPPLIES AND CHILDREN FOR SCHOOL.IT HAS BEEN HOT AND WHEN TRAVELING ON THE BACK WATER WAYS THE GREEN HEADED FLIES HAVE BEEN AWFUL SO WE HAVE A GIANT FLY SWATTER GETTING GOOD USE.OUR NEXT STOP WILL BE MYRTLE BEACH.
