CUMBERLAND ISLAND IS AMERICAS MOST BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS BEACH AND THE LARGEST OF THE GEORGIA COAST'S BARRIER ISLANDS.THE ISLAND IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY PRIVATE BOAT OR FERRY FROM ST. MARYS,GA.CUMBERLAND'S HERDS OF WILD FERAL HORSES GRAZE OPENLY ON THE MARSH AND FOREST AREAS,WATERING IN THE FRESH LAKES THROUGH OUT THE ISLAND AND VENTURING OVER THE ANCIENT SAND DUNES ONTO THE OPEN BEACH.THE FIRST DAY THERE WE WITNESSED AND GOT PICTURES OF TWO STALLIONS FIGHTING RIGHT ON THE BEACH.INCREDIBLE---THE STALLIONS ALL HAVE SCARS FROM PREVIOUS FIGHTS.THERE ARE 16 MILES OF WHITE SAND BEACH UNDISTURBED AND ROWS OF SAND DUNES AS HIGH AS 40 FT AND DOTTED WITH SEA OATS.THE DUNES ARE PRECIOUS SO THERE IS NO WALKING ON THEM .THERE ARE SPECIFIED DUNE PASS THROUGHS ONLY.YOU CAN BE WALKING ANYWHERE ON THE ISLAND AND HAVE A WILD HORSE HERD PASS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL ALL THE OLD OAK TREES SOME DRAPED WITH SPANISH MOSS LINE THE SAND ROADWAY.WE HIKED THE ISLAND TO THE DUNGENESS RUINS AT THE SOUTHERN END.A HUGE STONE ENTRANCE,A FOUR STORY CRUMPLING MANSION,ARBOR WALK,GREENHOUSE,SLAVE QUARTERS AND SERVANTS QUARTERS.WAR HERO NATANIEL GREENE PURCHASED THE LAND IN 1783 AND BUILT THE FIRST DUNGENESS MANSION.THE SETTLEMENT WAS ON THE NORTH END OF THE ISLAND WHERE THE BLACK WORKERS(NOT SLAVES)LIVED.THE FAMOUS CARNEGIE FAMILY REBUILT THE DUNGENESS MANSION IN 1884.,SO  THUS TODAY WE HAVE THE RUINS.THERE IS ALSO THE OLD ICE HOUSE WHERE ALL THE ICE AND COLD FOOD WERE STORED.IT IS A GREAT ANCHORAGE AND A GREAT PLACE TO EXPLORE THIS BEAUTIFUL ISLAND  WHICH HAS SURVIVED THE HUMAN IMPRINT . THEY ALSO ALLOW CONTROLLED CAMPING WITH RESERVATIONS.MR DACH HAD A GREAT TIME WALKING AND TAKING IN ALL THE NATURE.WE WERE ALL TIRED BY THE END OF THE DAY.WE ALSO EXPLORED THE NORTHERN END ON BRICKHILL RIVER AND EXPLORED THE PRIMITIVE PART OF THE ISLAND .WE SAW MORE HORSES AND LOTS OF DEER TRACKS,ARMADILLOS AND RACCOONS IN THE MARSH.WE WILL HEAD TO JEKYLL ISLAND NEXT.
