But where did I last leave you all? Ah yes, Singapore. Well, my description of Singapore was brief at best and left out the most important thing that was happening at the time, as it needed to be kept a suprise from Lara. Somewhere in Laos a massive suprise and treat fell into place. Alexa and Anna Lisa were going to be able to join us for our week on the beach in Malaysia and they were coming for 2 weeks!!!!!! I could barely contain my excitement, but had to as it was to be kept a suprise from Lara. It was so hard, but so worth it. The suprise was a beautiful thing. There were screams and hugs and tears and so much joy. And the week was amazing. It was just heaven in our own little piece of paradise. We spent a blissful ten days on the smaller of the two Perhentian islands living in our own little A-frame right on the beach. Inside it was very basic and certainly not luxurious, but the location combined with the porch made it what I consider to be the best place to stay on either island. It was wonderful. The islands became our home so quickly and we gathered a little family for most of the week. An unlikely and wonderful assortment of characters became a right posse and every night and usually every morning we would dine together. Morning means around 1pm when we would finally get around to having breakfast. Which took place either right before, or right after our morning swim. The water around the Perhentian islands is postcard perfect. It is a million shades of blue, starting from crystal clear, working its way gradiently up to a dark turquoise. It sparkles as the sun hits it and is so enticing that hours can be wiled away simply bobbing around in the shallows.
It has to be admitted... we didn't do much. We certainly adapted to island life and made full days out of eating, swimming, sleeping and lying in the sun. But we did do a few activities. One was a full day snorkelling trip, which was lovely. It wasn't as colourful as Fiji or the Great Barrier Reef, but there were many fish and most amazingly we saw a huge turtle. I think it was about 5 feet long. It was so beautiful and such a wise and peaceful looking animal. It came to the surface a few times, but generally it stayed at the bottom which was a little ways down. But I swam down a few times and got right next to it, or face to face with it, and it was a beautiful and serene experience. I would have loved to have been scuba diving so that I could have "momented" with the turtle a little longer.
Okay, I said activitieS, but really that was the only one. Well, hang on, we did go for a brief evening kayak one day which was lovely. But we did spend more time bobbing in the water at the beach we kayaked to than we actually spent in the kayak itself. And we did do a boat trip to the big island where we went to a stunning deserted beach, but that also involved much bobbing in the water. However, that time we did do a bit of naked bobbing, so it was a whole different experience. Swimming naked in warm, crystal clear water is a scrumptious treat. It feels so different and so liberating. I highly recommend it.
It was a beautiful week. Alexa has grown and changed, both physically and mentally and is a complete angel. Not that she wasn't before. But she has become such an amazing and wise woman and while she will always be my sweet little pecky, she certainly isn't a little girl anymore. She doesn't even seem like a teenager. She is so intelligent and witty and outgoing. She has really developed into something special. It was such a great chance to see a glimpse of who she is growing into without her two older advisors to guide her on her way. She is doing a damn good job without us. A little too good in fact. We want to still be needed when we get home. But it was a pleasure to spend time with her and talk with her. I can't believe that she has already gone back. Although it feels like a lifetime that we spent on the island, I can't believe that it is over and how much it feels like I was just arriving in Kuala Lumpur the first time, to meet them two weeks ago. I wish we could have had more time. But the next three months are going to fly by, I know.
Anna Lisa treated us like princesses, buying us shakes and beers and happy hour treats to enjoy as we watched the sunset every evening. She was the leader of our little family as her outgoing and beautiful nature drew everyone towards her and gathered up our little group. It was nice to get to know her even better and to see her wild and outgoing side as well her peaceful zenlike nature that I already knew and loved.
I have to admit that despite the perfection of absolutely everything I still didn't manage to get through the week without a few, I'm fat and I hate myself Bridget Jones style breakdowns, but it can be tricky being surrounded by such extreme beauty all the time. I'm not looking for pity, I simply want to be honest with the picture that I paint for you, and with the picture that I will have to remember this trip by. Every experience can be learned from, and hopefully bloody improved apon. It's a useless insecurity, yet one that I happen to be cursed with. Anyone have any useful how to love yourself for who you are advice that works... pass it on. ;-)
Anyhow, as disjointed as this message has been I hope it has painted a picture of what a great week and a half we spent together in the Perhentian islands. It really was an extremely special and incredible time that will always be a highlight of my round the world jaunt.
Now I am back off to Singapore with Lara tomorrow to see Indra one more time before heading up to Bangkok again and then on to the Maldives. And then I'm on my way out of Asia. Oh my goodness!!! It is all happening so fast.
I apologize profusely for my lack of personal emails, but the island was lacking in internet, and I only used it when I had to deal with losing my wallet. Oh yah, Dad, I lost my wallet. I hope you're happy!! ;-)
K, all my love from Malaysia. Keep in touch. It is so nice to read what you are all up to. I will write soon.
