You've probably gathered I really liked Malaysia and its people. I read someone's comment saying "the Malaysian people seem to have dropped their friendliness as a result of a reasonably healthy economic environment". I disagree. If that's the kind of friendliness you seek, you're welcome to it. Like most people, I prefer the friendliness of people who aren't strictly after your cash. And I'm happy I feel like I have come across some genuine friendliness.

The fact that I was travelling on my own definitely added to the Malaysian experience. And what's more, that I was doing so as a woman. It attracted a lot of curiosity, as there seem to be far fewer solo women travelling in Malaysia than say Thailand or Lao PDR. When you get beyond the "Where are you from?" followed by the "Are you alone?" and inevitable "Are you married?", I found the conversations very rewarding. I got to talk to a lot more locals than the couples I've met. I happily put up with one night of relative loneliness for that!
