Paul and I headed off this morning on the "tube" to Trafalgar Square to join a 10am walking tour, while Dave and Janet found the local PO to send stuff home. The tube was easy to navigate, clean, and had a good, easy to hear and understand PA system. Our guide for the walking tour was young, knowledgeable and obviously enjoyed his job. Naturally he knew the good spots, especially when it came to the ceremony of changing of the guards. Strange as it may seem, I felt quite moved by the pomp and ceremony. It was impressive and patriotic. And that from someone who would claim not to be a royalist. We met with Dave and Janet following the changing of the guard and joined the hop on hop off. First stop was lunch at the Methodist Central Hall cafe (another great church space), Westminster Abbey, 10 Downing Street and back on the hop on hop off to St Paul's, where Paul and Dave decided they'd had enough! After 45 mins sitting in traffic and hardly moving (I'm sure this was an exaggeration) off they got, onto the tube and back to the hotel. Janet and I enjoyed St Paul's (where Diana was married) - more homely feel than Westminster. Back on the bus around to Tower of London. Because it was half an hour to closing, reluctantly they let us through the gate, probably horrified when we said we could see what we wanted in 30 mins. The girl in the ticket booth said "but it takes three hrs"!! We zipped to the Crown Jewels - impressive - and were out within 25 mins. Back to the hotel by 6pm and dinner at Wetherspoon on the station concourse 7pm. Finished off a great day by having dessert and coffee at the hotel.
