It was a quick stop, with only two nights and one full day to check out the sights. Staying in a central neighborhood made it easy for us to walk everywhere as well as to gorge at a really yummy restaurant a block away.
Our main day started drizzly but turned fine. We made our way towards what we guestimated to be the sites, passing a large number of police and army as we went. No protesters or riot to be seen but there were quite a few broken windows and graffiti everywhere.
Stop one was the Acropolis Museum which is really fantastic - they've done a great job. We had a biiiiiig discussion regarding repatriating artifacts to their country of origin, and if Sam were writing this he would probably start a rant. But he's not!
On to the Acropolis and the Parthenon itself. Awesome. Just awesome. Really special being up on that hill and thinking about what it has seen.
Some more ruins - the Agora and the Roman Forum - helped us to see out the afternoon, as well as the Parliament building on the way home. It was a great whirlwind day, finished off by a drink and some more yummy food at an awesome vegetarian spot.
We'd expected a few problems, but Athens was all smooth sailing. Sam will undoubtedly want to insert Greek crisis jokes here and everywhere else for this entry but I will forbear!
