I wish digital cameras were already existing during the time in my life when we travelled there. However short it was, living in Dammam Saudi Arabia while I was 12 brought on a lot of learnings. It was a different time. A different kind of existence which I view with gratitude. I do remember that there were a lot of differences between how I lived there and how I lived in Manila.
For instance, I had to be shrouded in their black abaya even in the sweltering heat especially if we were going out. I remember the sand storms and going down some cave they claimed to be Judas' cave which was so cool it felt like the a/c was on in the middle of summer. I remember celebrating Christmas and hearing mass in a clandestine location. I remember how business establishments would close for afternoon prayers. But ultimately at the end of the day, after we've waded all through those differences and peeled them off, we are all the same people in pursuit of what can make us happy.
