Got the overnight bus from Foz and arrived in Florianapolis (Floripa) on Sunday morning (Ciarans birthday). Barra de Lagao where we were staying and where Conor lives is about an hour away from the city. Our room wasn`t ready when we got there so we went for a walk on the beach, which was only a couple of metres from our accommodation. The beach was packed as it is the summer season and it was the weekend - we stood out like sore thumbs, two whities amidst all the tanned Brazilians in skimpy swim gear. Our room was ready around midday so we moved in, had its own small kichen and living room area, was very impressive. What was even more impressive was the breakfast - bread, ham, cheese, fruit and about ten different types of cakes (sweet cakes for breakfast, I know, but some of them were just so yum) - all of it really fresh.

Met up with Conor Brady (my friend Carmelīs brother) that afternoon and had a few drinks on the beach. Headed for our first surf lesson the next morning and it was great craic, the instructors are really good and there were only three of us to one instructor. When they push you off it is easy enough to stand up. Went for one more lesson before we left. Were there for four days in total, moved to the house where Conor lived for the last two nights and that was great - the owners Estella and Gustavo are Argentinian and really good people. Met an Irish guy with an Argentine girlfriend who lived in Barcelona for four years and knew Victor (Dee`s ex). Apart from our surf lessons and a bit of beach tennis we basically just lazed around the place, watched a bit of beach soccer and ate lots of fish !

Oh, the watch smashed, very annoying but relationship still going strong so I suppose thatīs the main thing !

Summary / Observations
Barra de Lagoa is a cool, chilled out spot, would highly recommend it especially if youīre into beaches or surfing. Lots of sea food, which is quite good and reasonable. Overall more expensive than Argentina especially taxis and internet but still good value. Could get by communicating with Spanish and a few Portuguese basics.
