Today we did a day trip to Oberammergau and the Castle Linderhof. It was an adventure trying to figure out trains and busses. We did make it work but realized that there was a cheaper way - we would use that in the future. Oberammergau is a very interesting town. Back in 1635 the town prayed that it would be spared from the plague and diseases that were killing towns around them. Their prays were answered and as thanks they promised to put on the passion play - something they'd do every 10 years. The last was in 2010. Just outside the city is one of Mad King Ludwig's castles - Linderhof. It is actually very small but rather interesting. Seems to be more focused on the French Aristocracy rather than Bavarian. But it was worth the day trip. Any sunny day spent in the alps is a good day!
The adventure in the trains was interesting. First off, we purchased the wrong more expensive ticket. The ticket we has needed to make a connecting to a bus. This was a quick connection as we had 6 minutes between connections and there was a 5 minute walk. Fortunately the walk was not 5 minutes. Unfortunately the train was 8 minutes late. We missed our connection. The next bus was only 10 minutes later, so not a problem. We had made it to Oberammergau.
Then after we got to Oberammergau we purchased a bus ticket that cost almost as much as the train ticket. Then on the way back to Munich the ticket lady on the train was trying very hard to tell us something. She even asked 4 others until she found someone to speak English. Our connecting train to Munich was not running due to some accident. If we understood it right - a crane had fallen or hit the electrical wires in our track. We by the time we got to our connection stop - the problem was fixed and the train was on time.
