Have you ever met someone for the first time, did not know anything about and possibly never meet again BUT the first time you meet it feels like you have known each other all your life? That is how I felt when I met Nikolay Koytchev upon arriving at our condo at the Black Sea Village of Sveti Vlas.

Upon our arrival, another judgment lesson was received by Nickolay's unpretentious manner as he approached sweating from working in the complex wearing shorts, a t-shirt and sandals.   Nikolay turned out to be the property manager of the 200 unit complex we are staying at and had been very helpful from the minute we met.  It is so easy to tell if someone likes what they by the way they interact with you (ie, to be served or serve) – it was very clear Nicolay liked what he did and was good at it. I meet so few people who love doing what they do so it is a real pleasure to come across someone like that when/where-ever possible

We settled pretty easily into life here as we enjoyed the warm water swims in the Black Sea, pool side R&R, shopping, food and life as it came this week.  Some highlights include:

o   Arrival of Janice’s parents (Nana & Grampie Partridge) to visit and help celebrate Monique’s 10th birthday which was postponed several times to find the right time, condition and place – we are ALL glad that that task has been completed.

o   Obligatory visit to Old Nesebar - a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history but where James and Grampie got new shorts and we all tried the Gelato (for the nth time)

o   Experienced a traditional Bulgarian dinner and drinks at our new Bulgarian friend’s home.

o   Visited Sunny Beach by day and night; it doesn’t matter when you go it is one of the best and busiest beaches anywhere!

o   Spent a day at one of the waterparks to celebrate Monique’s birthday.

What I learned about and from my Bulgarian brother - Nickolay :

o   speaks 6 languages

o   was team leader on Survivor Bulgaria 1998 (Philippines)

o   studied 11 years to be veterinarian

o   once married to famous TV host

o   Loves his job

o   Life was better under Socialism

o   everyone was happy and had enough

o   Could not travel to non-Soviet countries but now can but have no money

  Salary:  150 leve/month ($96/month)

o   80% of resort Russian owned and is the richest country in the world.

o   From what we saw, Russians know Bling!

This week Bulgarians’ (and the world) were shocked by the terrorist bombing attack on a bus of Israelis’ killing 6 in retaliation for the killing of an Iranian scientist.  We were only 30km away from the Burgas Airport where Bulgaria’s first terrorist attack happened.  I get angry over such stupid religious/political insanity that kills innocent people for NO gain.  For a supposedly progressive world we don’t seem to be progressing in the right direction.  Like a bully, it only takes a few to ruin it for everyone.  Not that I wish ill-health on anyone I suggest that anyone who wants to kill (or hate) another (person, group or whatever) in the name of bla bla bla ……….we give them a free ticket on the world’s nicest cruise liner and sail them to the middle of the ocean with all the food, drink and pleasures/disciplines they desire.  We let them know this is a 7 day cruise and IF at the end of seven days they don’t love (their neighbor(s)) ………… the ship sinks and becomes a diving attraction for others considering senseless acts of hate.  I am doubtful the ship will be as full as we suspect as some of these 'self/so called’ leader’s self-hate would be evident by the masses as soon as they are separated from their rhetoric.

Plain and simple truth – you can’t love others until you are able to love yourself.  Get with it – love yourself then you will know what it is like to love your neighbor.  I don’t want to leave this post on a negative note so want to reflect on the good – family and friends (the sun helps too!)  Keep well and will chat next time from somewhere in Greece!

Glad to hear that you are safe after that nasty attack last week. Glad that you are having a good down time with Janice's parents too - I know that you were all looking forward to that. Have a safe journey to Greece xx
