Flag of New Zealand  , North Island,
Sunday, January 31, 2010

Saturday we left the city of Auckland to drive south towards Rotorua. On the way we stopped at the set of Lord of the Rings at Hobbiton. We got to visit the sheep farm where the movie was filmed and see what is left of the original set. You can see from the pictures that Jean now has a hobbit of her own! (ha-ha) After the tour we got to witness a sheep shearing and feed the baby lambs. Great fun.

Sunday we saw the native grounds of the Maori people. These are New Zealand's indigenous people whose homeland long ago was on the grounds of geysers and boiling waters. They now have a cultural center to share their customs which includes a wood carving house, weaving center and performance lodge. In their show, the natives depict how they stuck out their tongues and popped their eyes to frighten their enemies. Intimidation was part of their method of warfare ago.

John has been great adapting to driving on the left side of the road. It is quite a challenge especially with the round -a- bouts. The best part is when he goes to  turn on the signal indicator and turns on the wipers by accident. Jean is in charge of the directions and uses the GPS (also called the bitch in the box) to get us around. Lots of rain here and lots of sheep.
