Where I stayed

We left Iowa and headed north to South Dakota this morning. Although sunny, it was quite windy, which can really stink when your super tall passenger becomes a sail. By the time we had reached SD, the wind had calmed down as the skies darkened with the threat of rain.

We made a surprise visit to a nursing home in Irene to visit with Gary's mom. Ascending on the good people of this town, we arrived just in time to interrupt Ruth from her afternoon entertainment. Since she has been there for a few months, we knew that she missed her Friday night date with the Red Hat Ladies at the lounge. Not wanting to visit empty handed, we delivered a very cold beer and a lot of laughs with this sweet woman. Ruth, in turn, shared a number of Rotten Gary as a Child stories...now we have scoop on him! Oh, and just in case there was any concern over the care that Ruth was getting, not to worry! As soon as the button is pushed (er...or sat on), nurses come running. Trust me, she is in good hands.

Bidding farewell to Ruth and her friends at the nursing home, we headed out again in search of black hills and stony presidents. However, we were sidetracked by the intriguing billboards luring us to Mitchell, SD and the famous Corn Palace. God forbid we should pass on the Corn Palace tour! The history of this building was quite interesting, but the artwork created out of corn is really something to behold. The town changes the art on the outside of the building yearly, and the corn murals on the inside are a tribute to artists past, and get refreshed every 12 years, keeping the integrity of the original art. The sign at the Day's Inn announcing an indoor water park was more than Nick could resist, so we decided to stay put for the night. I have to admit, the water slide was a LOT of fun, despite the water-up-the-nose landing.

Tomorrow we are up and out early, heading to the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore.
