Despite a late night and too much to drink I was awake for sun rise. This, under normal circumstances would have been a bad thing, however it was worth it to see the sun rise over the Indian ocean. It was a sad morning as we had to say goodbye to Jim and Simone who were leaving us to work in Durban. Really sad that the group was splitting up.
We then visited Durban itself, which reminded me of Blackpool with more sunshine! Not a highlight of the trip and I can't say I was sorry to leave. We then had a long drive to the Drakensburg Mountains, most of which I think I spent catching up on the night before.
On arrival at the Drakensburg we transferred from our truck into a 4x4 to get up the hill. The main thing we noticed was the change in temperature - it was cold! We gave a young local boy a lift up the hill - quite a trek I would imagine if you had to do this to get home every day. At the top of the hill it was great to check into our log cabins (solar panels for electricity and a small gas boiler for hot water) and into the cosy main lodge where a fabulous dinner was served. We had a chat with our interesting host who had some stories to tell of his youth as a political activist in an apartheid era and the scrapes this got him into. It was an early night for most after the late night in Dolphin Coast.
