Updated from Istanbul...

Ok, I wanted to give everyone a little bit more info on the bombings in Egypt that just happened. And now that I'm in Istanbul and it's not costing me an arm & a leg to be online, I have time to do it.

First off... the location of the bombings. It was on the Sinai Peninsula in Dahab. This is one of the most beautiful parts of Egypt and I really do hope to see it someday. Anyhow, if you look on a map you'll see it's located far from the mainland of Egypt where I was.

Secondly... who was bombed. I know that when you hear "a resort in Egypt" it's easy to think that someone is trying to kill foreign tourists. But as I said in the last entry, the terrorism here is not aimed at Americans or anyone else, it's aimed for Egyptians. Sinai is an area frequented by Egyptian tourists, and a cafe and a supermarket were bombed. People trying to kill American tourists do not aim for Egyptian supermarkets.

Egypt has had problems with Al Quaida since LONG before September 11, 2001. And this time, the bombing was targeting Egyptians and Sinai itself. Bedouins did the bombing, and they targeted days that are specific holidays for Egyptians, to send a message. Sinai is a very holy place to many people, and there have been thousands of years of struggles over it. And as I mentioned in the last entry, the Sinai peninsula has a peace agreement that prohibits the kind of security measures taken in the rest of Egypt so that's terribly unfortunate.

Anyhow, that's the basic scoop. So the point is... I was always safe and the bombing was not at all targeting American tourists. They could care less about us, frankly. As I said, the people here like us.

(Previous entry...)

Internet is freakishly expensive from a boat on the Nile... so I can't write much. I sent out an e-mail to everyone but I'll say it again here... I AM FINE!!! The bombing is 600 miles away in Sinai/Red Sea area. It's as if something happened in Oregon & I was living in LA.

I stand by everything I said about Egypt in my Alexandria entry. I am being taken INCREDIBLE care of, by wonderful people. Honestly. I couldn't feel safer. It's wonderful. I promise.

Living in LA through the 90s was far scarier. ;)

Hey Lynn! Loving the pix but my computer hated the video. Got the 'spinning beachball of death' for about 2 hrs. I did enjoy about 10 seconds of the colorful spinning first, thank goodness.
I'm glad you're having so much fun. Thanks for keeping us with you!
