What I did
beach. waterfalls and hiking.

Flag of Costa Rica  , Province of Puntarenas,
Monday, August 22, 2011

ALL DAY travel, 13 hours by the way of SEVEN different buses, on Monday to arrive in Montezuma just before dark. a beach town by Costa Ricans standards as good sized however we have come to the conclusion that they say this for any beach town bigger than two blocks and Montezuma being three, ha! on Tuesday we hit the beach and we hit it HARD! our thoughts went out to all our friends and family who were back home, hard at work as we took a few adult beverages down to the beach and ENJOYED ourselves. after some tunes and beach baseball, four hours later the rain rolled in and we headed back to the hostel to clean up and lay low.

on Wednesday we took advantage of the Montezuma Waterfall, a fifteen mintue walk from our hotel to the trail head. crossing the river to hike along a web rooted trail, ducking under hanging vines and supersized palm frawns made you FEEL like at any moment Tarzan was going to come swinging by you. the JUNGLE. TOO COOL for words.

the waterfall cascades into three pools. the MAIN one being...mmm, 50 feet? there is a small cliff to the side which you can jump off. of course we jumped off it. too bad the water was SO BROWN though, otherwise it would have been beautiful. Scott swam under and behind the waterfall but he only lasted all of, fifteen seconds. the water pressure was too much and he couldn't open his eyes. we didn't end up making to the other two pools because gray clouds rolled in and we knew rain was coming and we better get out before then. played that game once in Hawaii, didn't go so well.

discovering that our communial kitchen had quite a bit of cookware we were able to cook our own meals. it would be a lie if i said that there weren't a lot of cup of noodles in the mix. HOWEVER, after your third meal in a row of them you can't continue to pretend that they don't taste like complete garbage. so with the limited options we got crafty. tuna melts, tuna mac and cheese, "french" bread pizza...with that said, imagine the bare MINIMUM supplies it takes to make to those things and then subtract a few. mac and cheese for instance, minus the butter. french bread pizza, minus themozzarella cheese and toppings...you get the picture. BUT we were pretty proud of ourselves and were ESTATIC not to be eating just cup of noodles and peanut butter with crackers anymore.

two main streets make a T, lined with little shops and restaurants. hippies, for lack of a better word, setup their tables full of feather and shell earrings, braided and stone braclets and necklaces, clay "statues" hoping you will take it off of their hands. we ended up staying six days in the lazy beach town. beach in the morning and rainy afternoons reading. next adventure...TAMARINDO.

Fun Facts:
-we HEAR the howling monkeys overhead BUT WE DONT SEE them. grr. sorry D.
-every day the ticos would spend hours on the beach trying to catch fish. nets. fishing lines. and we were lucky enough to see quite a few victory dances when fish were caught. glad we didn't miss that, ha!
-everywhere you go this song is BLASTING. only we are told that the song is in portugues, NOT spanish.
