We started our day with a level hike from one seaside village to another, on a walk called the Way of the Lovers. That's because Italians (and other people) walk along this trail and put padlocks on the railings to symbolize eternal, permanent love. We then faced a climb to the village of Volastra, which is perched on a hill. This was the most difficult part of the hike because we climbed up hundreds of stone steps to reach Volastra, past terraces carved into the hills that were planted thickly with grapevines, olive trees, and lemon trees. It was very warm during our hike, so the fragrances of bee balm, sage, and roses scented the air as we trekked upwards
I’m so glad that our tour included this hike; otherwise I don’t think I’d have done it on my own! The views were pretty incredible.
After reaching Volastra, we hiked down to Corniglia, which has a beautiful little bay, then we made our way to Monterosso, with its wide curving beaches. I think I understand why this part of Italy is called the Italian Riviera. I had a raspberry gelato, then headed to the ocean to swim. While I didn’t go all the way in the water, it was a relaxing way to end the day.
Tomorrow we head to northern Italy, to Milan and Como.
