Saturday 4th June

LK: We now have our next year's life packed into 4 bags. They’re heavy, mind. This still doesn’t feel like it’s happening, we’re still just doing rather than experiencing

KK. Had two months to get everything sorted and the last job (pushing the vacuum round our mostly empty house) was completed 3 minutes before Paul, Dee and Ritchie came round to take the last of our non-travelling stuff away, including Lynn’s car. Dee drove Paul’s new car to Newcastle Central Station and they waved us on our way. Gulp.

LK: But hoorah, we waved hello to some incredibly special people in London who I’m proud to call our friends. After some delicious tapas in the sunshine with Jon, we spent a great night in the Glasshouse Stores with Cathi, Mike, Tim, Karen and Bentley and were inspired by their best wishes for this adventure.

KK:  And was hot hot hot in London and in Soho all the bars were full to bursting.  Fortunately the Glasshouse Stores’ charms are suitably elusive and we could get a seat. Great company and a couple of beers and the stress of all the organising and packing washed right out of us and we were instantly exhausted.  Jon packed us off to bed. Oh and he is my literary agent now. Signed in blood (or lamb’s kidneys) in front of witnesses. I expect us to have features in all the quality press by next weekend.

Sunday 5th June

LK: One of the prices for Londoners to pay for the privilege of hosting next year’s Olympics has been two years of not being able to get anywhere easily on the tube at the weekend. Today we have spent a total of three and a half airless hours travelling underground on imaginative and non-direct routes. But now, it’s very exciting because we are in our hotel near Heathrow and we are going to New York tomorrow!!!!

KK: When we left Jon and Lisa they were packing a champagne picnic for the cricket at Lords. What larks. We went over to Kensal Green to see Shaun and Janet and their splendid offspring Jonathan and Joe and their friend Jamal. A proper Sunday dinner with Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes, washed down with Italian lager, the like of which we probably won’t be seeing in the USA.

LK: New York, huh?

by the way, if the "cathi" referred to is Unsworth - I am towards the end of the noy knowing" - as unputdownable as others - if ts not that cathi, then forget that.
