The Balestine Islands are called the Gallapagos of Peru. We took a boat to the islands (quite close to the mainland) and saw more birds than I thought possible in one place! The rock islands that they inhabit are naturally red and black, but are so covered in guano, they appear completely white! Not the best smell, but quite interesting. Then we hopped on a bus to the Paracas National Reserve and saw where flamingos play in the winter (not now, so no birds) and drove along the coast to check out rock formations. This is the second driest desert in South America and it really looks like nothing but sand for miles and miles. No scrub brush or anything! But itīs actually mostly limestone, so not much is able to grow.
After the tours, I caught a local bus and for 1/8 the price of my ticket to get down here and headed back to Lima. Staying with some ladies from the tours today and will spend my final night in Peru in the city center.
