Where I stayed
Tortuguero is completely separated from the mainland of Costa Rica, only accessed by the natural canal system that surrounds Tortuguero and the other nearby jungle villages along this section of the Caribbean coast.
The small village is famed for its nesting sea turtles that return to the beautiful beaches here each year
The boat journey to and from Tortuguero was definitely the highlight, as was the opportunity to venture to the beach at night to see a 1.5 meter mama green turtle lay her eggs. It was impressive to see, as each turtle comes ashore, digs a large pit in the sand, lays around 140 eggs, and then buries them before returning to the sea. For the babies that make it after hatching, they may live as long as 80 years. On to Cahuita.....!
