We arrived after the hour long flight to the smallest little airport - one good thing they seem to do in the Philippines is they check that you have only taken your luggage when leaving the airport, it's always amazes me that more bags don't get nicked. We didn't have any accommodation booked and nearly headed straight to El Nido with 8 other people who were organising a private van straight up from the airport but we wanted to go to the doctor to check my ear to see if I could dive. We had a place in mind which looked quite nice, Lotus Garden Inn, which was all of 200m from the airport as Puerto Princesa is really tiny. We got a tricycle there anyway and checked into the only room left, a family room with 2 huge beds. It was quite nicely decorated but as with a lot of these places, not really looked after (and had a frog in the bathroom!)- still it was only 1 night. Jacqui had a well deserved nap and I caught up on a bit of work before we headed out to the hospital- we luckily managed to find a place with a GP working as it was a Sunday! We waited about half an hour before we were seen: enter the 'Filipino Mandela'! The doc was really old and wise, and spoke just like Mandela. As with everyone here, he wanted to chat a bit first, where you from etc. After the chit chat he checked my ear which, even though it felt fine, was still a bit swollen on the inside. The doc couldn't see any sand in there... so who knows? After a long biology lesson on how the ear works, complete with models and encyclopaedias, we were on our way. (Only cost 250php.)

Next stop: ear plugs for Jacqui so she can swim without getting another ear infection. That was a fun treasure hunt across town before we managed to find a hardware store which had plugs to block out sound - they should do the trick so back onto the tricycle to head home. The tricycle driver obviously was having a family day out as his wife was on the back and his tiny kid riding on the front holding onto the handle bars. Not much health and safety round these parts!

Had all you can eat sushi and tepinyaki at the hotel which was not the greatest although the banana in some of the sushi was pretty good! Headed to Kinabuche for some pudding: Samurai crepe which was a huge pancake stuffed with chocolate and vanilla ice cream and made with love. Very delicious!

Headed back home to pack and get ready for the 6-8 hour journey the next day up to El Nido on a mixture of tar and dirt roads - and not sure what vehicle either! All we know is that we have read a lot of things about this journey and the fact that the heavens opened for most of the night is not looking very promising!

Following morning it was still raining! Up at 6am for the pickup which only arrived at 7.20!!!!! Thought they weren't coming at all so were making friends with an old American guy to head to the bus terminal and try sort something out there but they did arrive finally! We were unfortunately the last pickup so had the pleasure of sitting in the front along with the driver- no leg space and no space to sleep, not a good start. Plus, the driver wanted to chatter all the way there whilst the other 9 passengers snoozed away. He reassured us by saying that the mud on the dirt road is about knee deep when there is NO rain.... but the drivers like that as it's "part of the fun" but sometimes they get stuck :S Crazy chubby Pinoy driver who enjoyed a packet of chips every half hour to keep himself awake!

Got dropped off at Fort Wally bus terminal at 1:30 so the journey was 6 hours in total and the roads weren't bad at all! The scenery was beautiful and we had quite an enjoyable drive up the island of Palawan!
