Mon (2nd) So, I got on the bus in Wellington after checking out and was rather surprised to note I was the only one on it. I had the entire coach to myself so was chatting to the bus driver and his wife for the majority of the journey. Arriving in the early evening to Taupo, I checked into the same hostel as Liz and Em and managed to get into their room as well. That night we had a fairy quiet one in a couple of bars about town.

Tues (3rd) The weather was terrible in Taupo too meaning that no planes could get up to do the skydives and the Tongoriro crossing (a one-day hike) was closed. As a result, that morning Emily decided to leave. Liz and I decided to try to wait it out another day to see if we had any more luck. We attempted to hire some bikes to go for a cycle around the lake, but I got 5 mins down the road and relaised mine had a puncture so gave up practically before I'd started. Liz managed an hour's ride but thought the bike too uncomfortable to go on any longer. We were both feeling a bit glum with the weather and so Liz kindly treated us to the thermal pools. Hmm...after walking for ages we finally got there, but was rather discouraged by the green colour of the water and hadn't counted on the kids, who were still on their school holidays, dive bombing all over the place. Suffice to say it wasn't particularly relaxing. That night we tried a couple of bars again and then ended up in a small club where I ran into Steve, a guy who I'd met quite a bit throughout NZ and spent New Year's with so had a few drinks with him. Had a pretty quiet one though as we both had to get up early the next morning.
