So, I arrive at around 6pm on Tues (13th) into Franz Josef, where I met up with Liz and Emily and the group of guys they'd met on their bus. Unfortunately, Liz had signed up to go on her glacier walk for the following day but I had arrived too late to go on the same trip. Ack well, I was just going to have to do it at some later date on me tod. Franz Josef's a really small place, basically concentrated around two main streets so that night we just had a few drinks in the hostel bar and then a couple more in what I think was the only bar in town.

Wed (14th) Liz spent the day on her hike while I spent a few hours doing various walks up to and getting a good look at the glacier. It was pretty spectacular and you could clearly see how it had carved away at some of the rocks in the glacier valley. Had another good night out that evening.

Liz left in the early morning on Thurs (15th) and she picked a good day for it; it rained heavily all day - and with only my flip flops as shoes most of the walks were out of the question. Later in the evening I did go off to see some tunnels, but with no torch I got rather pathetically freaked out, so didn't end up actually venturing very far into them. Had a quiet night that evening in order to leave early the next day for the Fox Glacier.
