We packed up camp early this morning and took advantage of the free showers at the camp site then hit the road for our day of seeing big coastal redwoods! We stopped in Crescent City along the way and asked at the information centre about what was the best way to experience the big trees, then continued on to the 'trees of mystery', which is a tourist attraction with lots of unique and interesting redwoods as well as other types of trees within the redwood state park. There is the 'family tree' tree, which has 12 trees growing off one main trunk, very cool...then the brotherhood tree which is the biggest in the park and is over 2000 years old, 19 feet in diameter and 297 feet tall, although it lost 74 feet off the top in a storm, but is still one of the largest living things in the world. pretty impressive. The coastal redwoods are closely related to the sequioas in yosemite though so they have really shallow roots and you arent allowed to get too close to them because trampling causes them to fall over!

After exploring the trees of mystery for a while and riding the skytrail up through the treetops we kept on driving till we got to Trinidad, a sleepy little fishing town which had REALLY TASTY fish and chips! It was quite cold and windy so we didnt go to the beach because tom wasnt wearing a jumper once again! So we want to the restuarant at the beginning of the wharf which was super busy and had some fish and chips. We were sat by the windy with a beautiful view of the little bay and the kids playing and all the boats bobbing up and down and had a delicious lunch. We ran back to the warm car after lunch and continued on until we needed petrol and stopped in Fortuna. It was about 5pm by then so we decided to find somewhere to stay in fortuna and Gerry to GPS told us there was an RV park just around the corner so we went and checked it out and was reasonably priced so we stayed there for the night. We had beer, chips and peanuts for dinner and used the free wifi and then had a pretty good nights sleep!
