Where I stayed
Temporary residence of Sir Fooz Nanda Neuhuas III, courtesy of Merri Walters and family
We spent our first night in Ann Arbor, Michigan, camped out in front of a friend's house.
Ann Arbor is a really cool town - the downtown area looks neat with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, but the neighborhoods really got us. Some really cool architecture - my favorites, crosses between New England style, Farmhouse style, and Craftsman Bungalows. And people are not afraid of color up there!!! In much contrast to where I live, where trim is painted white, barns are painted white, and most houses are painted... you guessed it... white, houses in Ann Arbor were brilliant shades of red, blue, green - you name it, and often with several different accent colors on the trim, porch steps, banisters and railings. Even the porch ceilings were painted unique colors. And while it might sound like a hodgepodge, let me assure you that these were done with artistic taste and sophisticated sense of color. Gardens were overflowing with wildflowers and vegetables (yes, they plant vegetables in amongst their decorative plants). The whole neighborhood was very inspiring to us as artists, and as homeowners.
My visit was otherwise very short, not really getting enough time to spend with my friend. But I was still very grateful for the accommodation - the house, the SHOWER, the company, the opportunity to see my friend.
But the West is calling, and we can't help it but to leave quickly...
