We arrived at the Fox Glacier on the 25th all excited after our brilliant toilet stop in Franz Josef. Talking toilets!! Video to follow. We were up early and arrived on time all rested. We got call the gear to wear. Boots about forty years old, old sox, jackets cramp ons and a stick. We were looking really cool. A short five minute journey then to the bottom of the glacier. It was really warm and couldnt believe that ice wouldnt melt in that temperature. We headed off up the side of a hill on steps. About a 1000 of them and we were knackered by the time we got to the look out point. We were taking loads of photos at this point and the guide warned us not to take any for a while and keep your hands on the chain on the way up. A couple of people didnt obey the rules and the guide was snapping saying he would throw their camera over the edge!!
We got on to the glacier and walked up through the middle of it for a while. The guide cut steps and we had to put on the crap-ons. We walked in small crevices that they filled every day. The ice was dirty at the front of the glacier but as we moved further up it the ice seemed to turn blue. It was amazing to be walking on it. Quite cold but the minute you get off it the weather was roasting again. We spent a couple of hours on the ice and took loads of pics and then we had to make our way back again. About two hours back but most of it was downhill. The guide said that they race it every now and then and the record is 25mins back.
By the time we were heading back we were shattered and the boots were killing us. So used to flip flops now that it felt like a brick on your leg. We eventually got back and got our certificates to say we had done it. Really cool day. We only walked some of it and we were exhausted. Couldnt walk to the top Id say. Had our dinner and took turns sleeping while the other drived to our next stop.
Queenstown yay!!!
