After leaving Cape Reinga late in the evening we decided to get as far South of Auckland as we could that night. We eventually gave up driving six hours later and decided to stop at a beach town called Leigh. It rained a lot that night and woke up in what was a busy spot to park Effel. The beach had a glass bottom boat and loads of people were out snorkelling the bay around it. We were tempted to do the glass bottom boat but the rain came back again and we decided to move on. This is when we decided that New Zealand can be like home sometimes. Lots of sheep and four seasons in one day too.

We arrived in Rotorua that evening and decided to walk around the town centre. Lucy commented on how there was an awful smell out of the restaurants we were passing until I suggested it might be the sulphur smell from the volcanic rocks. Don’t eat out in Rotorua. The smell is terrible in the town centre. Smells like Iceland Clo and Ems!  The first night there we stayed down by the water and got up early for our day trip to Waimangu Volcanic Park. That was awesome. Although I (lucy) nearly had a heart attack on the last hill. John practically had to carry me back. Another 10k hike. But so worth it! We saw the biggest hot spring in the world. The frying Pan Lake. It bubbled and churned at 95 degrees beside us. Cool place. We saw numerous crators, one of which is known as the Entrance to the Underworld. There was a white cross just off the pathway where some silly tourists went off the beaten track and were washed away by an erupting Geyser. The park was full of crators and hot rivers and smelly steam holes and mad rock formations. We had an awesome day, but we missed the bus back from the lake and ended up doing double the intended hike. Extreme! Loads of photos and videos we got very snap happy!

How ye all? Good luck in the Pres toots! You'll be grand!
