After travelling over yet more time zones we arrived in New Zealand, knackered but in good spirits, ready for our new and exciting adventure. It was getting dark before we left the airport, having spent 3 hours organising and booking our campervan - well it was to be our home for the next month! I think we hired the most budget van they had (it's all we could afford), an old Ford Transit converted in to a camper van, on board though it had everything we needed including a toilet and shower. The interior was pretty poorly designed and not in great shape but hey backpackers can't be choosers - our new motto!!

Our first night in New Zealand was a cold one, (whose idea was it to come here in winter!) such a contrast to Asia a day earlier. Our first port of call was to a cheapo clothes shop and a supermarket, to stock up on warm clothes (can you believe we didn't bring any), food and wine - extremely important for those very cosy nights in the van. After consulting the Lonely Planet we decided to leave the city behind (Auckland didn't appear to be very camper van friendly) and hit the busy highway out of Auckland in search of the fantastic scenery this country boasts of and we have all seen in Lord of the Rings.

A quick fact if you're interested Ethere is something like 4 million people living in New Zealand and 39.2 million sheep!!!!
