Since Saigon we had constantly been on the move and we felt it was time to just settle somewhere for a few weeks and chill by the beach before heading to a wintry New Zealand. We thought there would be no better place to do this then on a Thai island - cheap beer, great food, fantastic golden sandy beaches and clear blue sea.
So after 9 hours on a train, a further 7 hours on the slowest boat ever (which we shared with cargo & rats) we arrived on the island of Koh Phangan, we headed up the West Coast on a tuk tuk to a place called Haad Yao, a good choice we found later when we visited other parts of the island in our hired jeep - too many English people! Haad Yao was lovely and quiet, with a gorgeous beach, a few restaurants & bars and some great people. We stayed in a bungalow for 200 baht (3 quid) a night which over looked the beach, our balcony had a hammock (imagine the fights over it) and many an evening was lost just sitting with a beer watching the sunset - it was paradise!
Just short of 3 weeks we were still there, we hadn't intended to stay this long and were due to fly to NZ on 1st August but I became ill with a kidney infection and we had to put our plans back a week. At first I thought it was just backache, I sent Matt to get me some painkillers and sleeping pills - I hadn't slept all night and was going crazy with pain. Instead he came back with 2 young Italian doctors who were on holiday at the same resort and were happy to check me over. They suggested going to the hospital straight away as it was possibly my kidneys, at this point I was also developing a fever and couldn't keep anything down. I was admitted in to Koh Phangan hospital for 3 days where I was put on to a drip and antibiotics - Matt was fantastic and really looked after me. I was only able to leave once my temperature went down, at one point it was 40 degrees - this happened to be on my birthday, so I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Me and Matt decided that like the queen I was going to have 2 birthdays this year and to celebrate when I was better wooo hoo.
We loved Koh Phangan and the owners of High Life, where we stayed have welcomed us back next year can't wait!
