"Picture Julie in a tight black leather cat women suit and me in a ski mask and kaki outfit... no wait... a James Bond gucci suit, pistol and all... thats much better!"
Switzerland... ahhh... nice, relaxing, beautiful, switzerland. Aside from it being insanely expensive here, we are just loving it
We are going to Paris tomorrow morning so Ill put my Swityerland entry in from there.
-- Austria, ahhh....
Arriving in Austria, on the early morning train from Budapest, we both exhaled a deep sigh of relief. Hungary was great but the heat, non-english speaking locals and slight frustration from some of the local hassles were getting to us. It was a big relief once we heard the sound of proper english coming from our train conductors mouth as we went from Vienna to Salzburg, our midway point from Budapest.
"Passport? Why the hell would you need a passport in the middle of Austria!" said the smiling austrian train conductor as I handed over all of my documents to her from our train cubicle
These were the nicest words we had heard in days...
Always taking word of mouth over guide books, we decided to head straight to Salzburg rather than Vienna as our friend had suggested. We hoped that Salzburg would have enough to make our 3 day stay enjoyable, luckly, it did.
One hill top castle... check,
Enough Schitzel to make you go blind... check,
Numerous music concerts... check,
One bed and breakfast nestled in the Austrian hills... check!
More than enough... and to put the cherry on top, we arrived right in the middle of the Salzburg Music festival!
-- The Vienna Mission
With military precision, a well planned ( ok maybe not all that well planned..
** For best effect, if you have the sound track for mission impossible handy, play it in the background as you read this. Humming the sound track will produce the same effect.
( Picture Julie in a tight black leather cat women suit and me in a ski mask and kaki outfit... no wait... a James Bond gucci suit, pistol and all... thats much better! )
"Beep, Beep, Beeeeep, Beeeeeeeeeeeep" sounds Julies alarm.
"5:15AM" flashes menacingly on the watch.
Grunt.. Grunt... Groan...
"Damn... we have to get going!" I say relunctantly
** Start theme song here.
-- 5:30 am
The sun isnt quite out yet when the taxi screeches to a halt in font of our bed and breakfast. Already waiting outside, we jump in.
"To the train station" we grunt to the driver.
-- 6:00 am
Train leaves from Salzburg station to Vienna, luckly, with us on it.
-- 9:30 am
3 coffees later, the train arrives in Vienna... With only a half a day in Vienna for us to see the sights we decide that a city tour is the best plan of attack.
-- 9:45 am
Tourist agency convices us that their 30$ bus tour is the best in the city, but it leaves in 20 minutes
-- 9:50 am
We both part with 30$ and get our tickets from the agent. Food and toilettes are now very neccessary before the tour leaves... in 10 minutes!
-- 9:55 am
An impressive high speed stop at the subway for a sandwich to go.
-- 9:58 am
An even more impressive high speed stop at the toilette and one great locked European toilette cubicle escape show by Julie.
-- 10:00 am
The tour guide meets us at the front doors of the train station. 10am on the button...
-- 10:01 am
Realize that we have lost the precious 30$ tickets for our tour.
-- 10:05 am
Frantically search every nook, cranny and orifice on self...
"Damn! No tickets!" We both say simultaneously while staring blankly at each other.
-- 10:10 am
An excrutiating re-enactment of the previous 30 minutes takes place in our heads.
-- 10:15 am
An even more excrutiating re-enactment of the previous 30 minutes takes place in the train station with our guide
-- 10:20 am
A pride swallowing, painful decision to part with yet another, now even more precious, 30$ each for 2 more tickets.
-- 10:25 am
Off to the 120$ bus tour of the city.
"This better be one good tour!"
-- 11:45 am
Visit to the habsburg palace...
-- 11:55 am
-- 12:15 pm
-- 13:30 pm
Visit downtown Vienna...
-- 13:35 pm
-- 13:40 pm
-- 14:00 pm
Tour is finished... Vienna sights have been conquered... Now to get back home...
-- 14:05 pm
Decide to take 2:21pm train back to Salzburg
-- 14:10 pm
-- 14:15 pm
-- 14:20 pm
"Run!!! Stop that Train!! Out of the way old hag!"
-- 14:21 pm
Into the sunset, the train to Salzburg chugs its merry way back home...
Exausted, heads still spinning, and Julie, in dire need to get out of her catwomen suit, we both spend the evening watching "The Sound of Music" and crash out early...
-- Salzburg, the rest...
The rest of our site seeing in Salzburg took a much, much, much slower pace ( thank god )
After an inspiring 8pm Organ recital in a big old baroque cathedral we caught a late night train to Switzerland and here we are... actually currently with one foot out the door on the way to Paris.
