We got off the boat and walked into Luang Prabang. We were underwhelmed. It took us like ten minutes to figure out that we weren't staying long. The place is simply too expensive. I guess the army of middle-aged euros in safari gear don't mind though. There were some cheaper hotels but they were complete shit holes with no scene or character. The locals don't want much to do with you if you're not willing to be ripped off for a mountain bike (20 dollars yep dollars) or a jungle trek ( 200 dollars). We stuck around until my birth day and headed out.
During the couple of days that we were here we went to a waterfall that was amazing. There were like 10 tiers that were great for swimming and a decent hike to the top. Upon pulling in and seeing the mass of vans and tuk-tuks we were worried that there were going to be 300 people standing shoulder to shoulder around a puddle with a Laos guy pissing in it. Turns out we were wrong. Yeah there are pics
On my birthday we drank some decent french white at a swanky place on the main drag and wound up going bowling for after hours. I should mention that there is a national curfew of midnight here. They are pretty lax on the tourists but business have to have everyone out by eleven thirty. Technically you must be where you are staying by 12. There, for whatever reason, is a bowling alley that is exempt from this policy. The place fills up with college aged revelers from all over the world. Sorry to say this Brits but there are just too many drunk representatives from your island.
The next morning we woke up super early hungover and took a seven-hour bus ride to Phonsavan
