CURRENCY: £1  = AUD$1.8

After two months travelling round South-east Asia I have finally made to the other side of the world, to Melbourne - Australia!

Well whatever views you may have of Australia's weather you can disregard them straight away! It was 25degrees when we landed at 7am in the morning and this continued throughout the day which was perfect, but by the evening I had my jeans and hoody on as I was absolutley freezing (and they keep the air-con on everywhere, madness)! Way too cold to be sitting out on the beach having a barbie I must add, in fact I havent seen one BBQ since arriving here!! Im guessing the heat and humidity of Asia has thinned my blood further and I am now a permananet ice cube! Bring on the summer months of December-March and 40 degree heat

Enough about the weather... my first few days in Melbourne were spent sorting out visas, bank accounts, mobiles, etc. so nothing exciting really but it does make it sink in that im going to be here a while! It was then time to do a bit of sight-seeing as I was staying out of the city on St.Kilda Beach. We caught the tram into the city and then went round the city to see the sightsa which included Federation Square, Flinders Street station and the numerous shopping malls. I also went to the Melbourne Cricket ground (MCG), a 100,000 capacity stadium as Melbourne is the biggest sporting capital of the world. It was then onto a 19th Century Prison where we were treated like prisoners for an hour, locked up in a cell and ordered around; a scary experience and a good way to put people off breaking the law here! And of course no one from the UK can come to Melbourne and not do the "Official Neighbours Tour"! We were taken down Ramsay Street and took pictures outside all the residents houses with the neighbours sign, saw the sets of Carpenter's mechanics and Grease Monkeys and even got to meet Dr.Karl Kennedy himself, such a down to earth guy and there were soon a few star-struck people around!

After a few days in the city I was itching to get away again and into the countryside as I have learnt I am really not a city person and would do anything to be out in the open! So I soon had a flight booked and was off to Tasmania.....

Hey Girl!!! What an amazing diary!!! This is the first time I read it and it sooo cool!!! Of course I am very jealous but also happy for you!!!
Vince is going to see you in Sydney-he only said that on his last day before leaving us for 3 weeks, otherwise we wanted to collect a little parcel for you (pork and mince pies etc.) I started writing my dissertation but will keep checking your diary in between studying. JULIA XXX
