We've been home for almost 48 hours, and despite being train-wrecked from jetlag, I don't think I've ever been so glad to get home.  This in spite of toxic-level exposure to HGTV in our New York City hotel and all the way home on JetBlue; by then I'd decided I lived in a granite-less, dated, shabby near-tenement.  But home looked fine and the garden lush from all the rain.

The trip, we agree, was too long, involved a cruise (and we're not cruise people, it turns out), and lacked enough square feet for this particular marriage. One-room living in hotels/ship is a stretch for us for five weeks.

The up side: The Lucerne Hotel and I made up;  knocking $30 a night off the bill helped, but so did the sincere apology from the day manager.  Loved Castle Howard, Beatrix Potter's house, seeing my cousins, Corfu,  Cinque Terre, Richard Serra's drawings,  and  Annika graduate.  My English cousins again made me feel as though I really DO have a family, and they went to a lot of trouble to give me a wonderful, welcoming stay.   But I plan to be firmly planted in Berkeley for some time.

Remind me of this.
