A super early bus ride to Chivay began with some Coca leaf tea to assist us with the high altitude we were about to embark on...unfortunately none of us really approved of the taste so Loz bought (what she thought) was coca toffees but were in fact fertility toffees... Whoops! Haha but they tasted good and gave us energy on the long walks.

On the way to Chivay we stopped past local villages and saw lots of lamas, alpacas and their wild relatives vicunas - all being looked after by local herdsman, Hannah even spotted a flamingo! We also stopped at the highest peak for our tour which was 4,900m above sea level. Luckily staying in Arequipa the night before no doubt helped acclimatise us with this...however it didn't prevent most people in our tour from feeling the effects of the high altitude. There were headaches...motion sickness...dizzyness...and well Lauren claims the high altitude was the reason for all her blonde comments! But Hannah puts it down to just Lauren being Lauren...what a ditz!

Chivay was a quaint little town set on the Colca Canyon, a massive canyon that spread for miles. We walked (and got very burnt!) along the canyon to spot the famous condor (a scavenger for the local area that has a three and a half metre wing span). It was an incredible feeling being able to see the condor in the wild - what a beast!

A much needed soak with some of the local brews in the natural hot springs ended a great day.

L & H xx
