Aaaagh overslept again!! This time it was just past nine when the phone or something woke me up, but I'd said I'd meet Carli and her dad for a morning out in Hiroshima. Oh well, I still had a seafood miso soup (beware of the shells!) and an onigiri waiting for me, so I stepped out into yet more lovely sunshine and had brekkie on a bench by the river. I went off to the peace museum after that, and I really do recommend it to anyone visiting japan; all the information is there in english, and despite having to constantly part the sea of japanese schoolkids (they are mega sweet though), I got to see everything I wanted to. I even took a photo of the watch that is stopped at 8.15, when the bomb hit. I can't lie, I did get tearful, especially when i was reading about when the children had to go through. But it's been a great experience. I was running out of time fast, so I only had time for 1 or 2 shops, and i actually managed to find a ghibli shop, so that was that :) I did get a fold out shopping bag, i'm not sure about airline rules but i'm planning on bringing more stuff home in it. There was so much that looked amazing, but i7m sure i'll have plenty of chances to get something nice. We met up again and caught the train to miyajima, it took about an hour but was a lovely ride. Then it was about 10 minutes on the ferry, and we could watch the stunning floating torii gate coming into view. Miyajima island is something else; completely idyllic but there are no hospitals or cemetaries because no one is 'permitted' to give birth or die there! Not exactly sure how that's enforced.. and there are some dead cheeky deer who like to eat maps, as i found out firsthand :D we walked up to the gates, and then up many many steps, taking in so many fantastic sights. The beauty of it all took my breath away. And we were blessed with glorious weather, the cap it all off. I bought a few different flavours of special maple leaf-shaped pastries called 'momiji manju' , they can have fillings of chocolate, custard, red bean etc. even cheese! and i also ate the local delicacy, oyster! they taste really nice actually, at least they were grilled! we then all went our own separate ways to explore whatever we wanted to, and then make our own way back. I got some super-tasty 'kinako' ice cream, and made friends with the shopkeeper :) i ate it sitting at the harbour, and it was so quiet as most tourists were heading off home. i also got a rice paddle which is a bit of a miyajima souvenir. I didn't know what time the ferries stopped running, and lovely as the island was, it wouldn't be great to be stranded there overnight, so I caught the 17.40 ferry and sat downstairs in the comfy seats :P i made another friend, a girl called marimi, who ended up buying me some cute souvenir cracker thingys, and the shopkeeper gave me some more momiji too :D i'll try to bring some home with me, if they'll keep. Anyways marimi said i should take the train back instead of the tram, because i had my rail pass, so i travelled partway back with her. she was really cool, i love meeting all these great people. i knew it would be a trek from the train station so i bought an eel sushi bento box- yum yum! - for afters, and set off. i pooped into a couple of 7 11 convenience stores, and got chatting with with another guy (who i've got such a funny picture of) and took in nighttime hiroshima. it's ridiculous how safe you feel really, a bit too safe to be honest. i followed the tram line so i could hop on board if i got tired, but it didn't take long for me to get close to the hotel, and i got talking to another guy who helped me find a shortcut. he said he liked man united football team! so here i am back at the hotel, but it's dead late so i'd better get some sleep- early morning trip to kyoto tomorrow!!

ciao
