Today was the departure day of the tour, after breakfast I decided to get out of Calangute and head south of Goa to Palolem. I was joined by two guys from New Zealand who were also on the tour. We jumped on 3 local buses, traveled for 2 1/2 hours which cost us 60RS each (68rs is a pound!) and ended up in Palolem which turned out to be exactly what we wanted it to be! Sun, sea and sand. Unfortunately we were there 2 weeks before peak season so non of the beach huts were open yet- the were in process of being built! Instead we found a small place with two rooms which was only about a two minute walk from the beach. Perfect!
For the next couple of days we enjoyed good food, cheap drinks and (reasonable) weather. Many of the other travelers here all had the same mentality just to chill out- and so we joined them. I have a feeling that Palolem is what Calangute used to be like, fairly untouched and low key. I hope that Palolem stays this way as I'd love to come back in the high season and do it the proper way and stay in a beach hut!
The Kiwis and I decided to bust a grove and head further south to the state Kerela. We booked a sleeper train which typical Indian time was 3 1/2 hours delayed and didn't arrive till 3.45am, so we 'slept' on the platform and just had to wait. After about 16 hours in the train I reached my stop at Ernakulam, and the kiwis had another two hours to go on the train as they were heading to Alleppey- the best place to hire a house boat. This was my first time solo traveling in India so I was pretty apprehensive!
Overall, Goa didn't turn out to be a complete failure and Palolem is a definite tick on my list.
