We arrived in Munich a good 5 days before the start of Oktoberfest, but already the first question other travelers would ask: 'are you here for Oktoberfest?' (no we are not) instead of the usual 'oh, Australian huh, from Sydney or Melbourne?' There were already stalls set up outside the train station selling lederhosen and dirndl.

We joined a free city walking tour taking in the main sights of Munich, from the hofbrauhaus beer hall to numerous churches to the site of Hitlers failed 1923 coup, the beer hall putsch. Despite being a cold and windy day, the surfing wave was busy with queues of wetsuit clad surfers waiting for a go on the artificial wave in the brown murky river. Bevan then took me on a long walk through the Englischer Garten, the huge park in the city, which I thought was really nice until I realised we were just going past the 'nude beach' - of course empty in the freezing weather.

Of course, being Munich, we found time for a visit to the Augustiner brewery - think beer hall cross restaurant with the brewery on site. Bevan got stuck into a litre of Edelstoff, incidentally also the popes favorite beer. My preference was the dark beer. We chatted to a couple from Bremen who turned out to be grandparents in their sixties. That didn't stop them from downing more than 2 litres of beer each while still appearing far more sober than us.

Through some strange coincidence, our dorm was full of Engineers - quite an appropriate prelude to an entire day spent at the Deutsches museum. The 6 floor museum (we didn't make it past floor 3) includes a replica of an entire underground mine, interactive physics displays and electricity demonstrations including suspending a museum employee in a Faraday cage and zapping them with a few thousand volts of electricity. And that is just half the ground floor.
