Leaving Saranda by the coastal, mountainous route there is only one bus a day. 5:30am. Getting up at 3:30 was not the high point of the day nor was staggering through dark and deserted streets to the bus station - the surrounding coffee shops a hive of activity.
Thankfully we managed to keep our eyes open for the scenic parts, and scenic they were, when the view was not obscured by a herd of cows or goats. Zigzagging up mountains with views to the coast and deserted white strips of beach between the rocky cliffs of coast before the slow climb up the Llogaraja pass, a height of 1000m (it took the old struggling bus a long time). The view from the top was amazing (and I hope it didn't get better after that as we both promptly fell asleep.)
