Lake Balaton is Hungarys seaside holiday location, except not on the sea. Not surprising, since Hungary doesn't actually have any coast (any more). Lake Balaton is convincingly large enough though, except maybe for the slightly opaque tint to the water. The entire circumference of the lake is made up of towns that merge into each other in a constant sprawl of tourist accommodation.
Sounds awful, but it is actually quite a pleasant place, as long as you block out all the lycra clad cycling Austrians and Germans.
Conveniently, Balatonlelle also has a train station where the international train to Zagreb (our next destination) stops. Inconveniently, the Hungarian rail ticketing system is such that we can't buy tickets here nor on the train, but only at the town of Fonyod, 10km away. Even in Fonyod, we caused mass confusion and had to wait half an hour for our tickets to be hand written.

Lake Balaton boasts a bike path running the circumference of the lake. What they don't tell you until you get there is that it is actually a block back from the lake on minor roads, the scenery consisting solely of holiday houses. Not quite what we had in mind, but a pleasant ride with frequent diversions to the actual lake.
