Back on the coast in Lattakia, which sadly is a port city so has no beaches in town. The beaches we did see where either filled with rocks our tourists (or both), so we weren't inspired to climb off the minibus.
The town itself is relaxed though, and most of the local young women are clad in extremely tight clothes and no headscarf.

We visited Mesopotamian city Ugarit, where the oldest written tablets (non-pictorial style alphabet) were found. We also saw the Castle of Saladin, built by the Crusaders even to the extent of hand digging a canyon hollowed out of the solid rock. After all that, it was promptly lost to Saladin in the space of 2 days. The journey there and back was half the fun, with a local bus driver taking us the extremely scenic way and refusing any payment.

We went to an opening of a cartoon exhibition at a local cafe (the hostel we are staying at is owned by a serious tintin fan) and met a lot of Lattakian locals - all of whom seemed to be English professors at local schools and universities.
