Where I stayed
The scenery in El Calafate is more impressive than pretty - no more quaint little villages, just wide open spaces and huge craggy mountains interspersed with giant lakes. The town itself seems to be booming with massive amounts of construction to cope with all the tourists. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon to find all 7 ATMs in town empty. Apparently this is completely normal on weekends and means we were stuck in town until refill time on Monday when queues were half an hour long.
There is one unmissable attraction nearby - the Perito Moreno glacier which is 60m tall, 5km wide and advancing fast enough that you can stand and watch the glacier calving icebergs with a huge crash into the lagoon.
