Arrived in Ouro Preto at 6:30am not feeling very fond of overnight buses. A combination of badly surfaced, winding roads, bad suspension and crazy drivers makes for little sleep. Ouro Preto was a gold boom town in the 1700s, when evidently the thing to do when you had money and were catholic was build churches. A lot of churches. They range from the completely gaudy to quite beautiful, and all are excessively decorated - the richest has 440kg of gold leaf used as decoration.
The town was dead quiet early in the morning and everything was closed, so we got completely lost among the winding and hilly cobbled streets.

Our hostel has a pleasant verandah area to sit and drink beer... although it seemed like there was a dire beer shortage in the town - it took us a good hour to discover that beer is sold by the butcher.

Next stop Rio, where we are looking forward to some warmer weather (and a hostel where everything doesn't smell like mould and preferably without ticks).
