Wa Wa Woooord of the DAY!

Spanish: Embarazada

What do you think this word means??? I hope you think it means embarrassed, because it doesn't. You will be embarrassed if you use this word in the wrong context.

English: Pregnant

I just saved you from a major case of being embarazada when you come visit me in Mexico.

............                   ______________________________________________         ..........

Well, we all have our own preconceived about countries (and their citizens) other than our own. For instance, before moving to Mexico I didn't bring my favorite watch because I figured that it'd look too shnazzy and might get stolen. While this thought is partially true, I also need to say that most everyone has a shnazier watch than my Wal-Mart special.

What we think about people of different origins is probably right. And, it's probably wrong too. In a world so large and diverse, there can be no absolute. So, let's try and keep an open mind and try to play a little nicer. The following thoughts come from my experiences thus far in Mexico. I'll try and give an opposing view point to that which American's typically hold towards Mexico/Mexicans. Disclaimer: My ideas are not wrong, but they're not right either.

Tacos!
Yes, Mexicans eat tacos. I eat tacos as well. Who can blame us? The tacos they have here are delicious. And tiny.  I can eat like 8 of these tiny little treats. The tacos as well as other foods  that I eat here in Cuernavaca are not typical to all of Mexico. There are seven regions, each containing there own type of food. Guess what! They also enjoy pizza, hamburgers, and coca- cola here. Coca-Cola is kind of an epidemic in Mexico. It's jacked full of sugar, and people often substitute it for water.

Everyone wants to move to the US.
Well, no. Many people are quite happy here and are deeply rooted with in their communities. FAMILY is also a beautifully important aspect that many can not leave behind.

Siestas!
There is only one person in my Mexican family that regularly takes naps. Me. Most of family goes to bed after I do and wakes up before I do. I'm definitely trying to obtain some of that work ethic.

Mexico is totally laid back.
Mexico does have a different concept of time. Often times, one will wait for a friend for up to a half hour. 7=7:30. I won't call that Mexican Time, because it is also Aaron Time. The fact that I thought everyone was on Mexican Time has upset some people, because there are many who are quite punctual.

Drugs!
I have yet to be offered drugs. It seems as if many people here despise the drug trade because of all the death and chaos that it has caused (The government says 50,000 deaths in the past six years or so, other sources put it closer to 100,000). Others respect the Narcos because of their control of the land (sadly a well controlled Narco territory is much safer than a non Narco controlled territory). The Narcos also provide a great deal of economic opportunity (estimated at 100 billion a year, about 1/10 of the annual GNP). If anything Mexico is a supply line. Many of the people here can not afford to do the the drugs that run through their own cities. Half the blame lies north of the boarder (but let's not think about that...)

Sombreros
That's stupid. Not everyone wears a sombrero. I've seen one person wear one in Cuernavaca. Me.

Mexicans bring back American money to their country and live like royalty.
For their sake, I wish this was true. We've met many a taxi driver who has lived in the US for years. Taxi drivers make about 200-300 pesos ($15-20) for a long days work. Certainly doesn't seem like royalty to me.
