Thiruvambadi Beach Retreat

Finally in Varkala..a stunning beach town on the Arabian Sea. We were so exhausted after a whirlwind tour through the state of Tamil Nadu via buses and trains that we couldn't wait to take a break and just hang on the beach. Oh....but first let me tell you about our first Indian train-ride experience: we took the overnight passenger train in a 1st class cabin with no AC. We had heard that 1st class w/o AC is worse than 3rd class w AC so we were prepared for the worst. It actually was quite pleasant compared to the bus rides even though it took me some time to get used to the prison-like bars on the windows which made me feel pretty claustrophobic..but once I noticed that all doors can be and will be opened randomly during transit I felt fine (hence the people hanging off the trains image you might have seen). Anyway, our private 2-bed berth was pretty comfortable and no cockroaches dared to come to our little beds...nevertheless I got sick from the fans running all night and I had another reason to just relax for a few days on the beach.
Varkala is a really cool place with a pretty and clean beach, great waves and warm ocean, a fantastic cliff walk with great restaurants and a peaceful vibe...
We recommend:
- Thiruvambadi Beach Retreat or Wood House Resort
- Trattorias Restaurant
