And the birthday lagniappe? An adorable little Romanian dog that ran for 40 minutes with me, then followed me back to the hotel and parked himself on the steps. I came down 10 minutes later to take his picture and he got camera shy and took off. But for 40 minutes, I was in love.
We are in a small Romanian city in Transylvania - no nearby castles (nor vampires that I'm aware of) but the city is situated around a large fortress/quadrangle. It's called the Cetate Bastionare and encloses both a Roman Catholic Cathedral and a Romanian Orthodox Cathedral as well as a hotel, some sort of University and a consortium of restaurants, bars and small cafes. We had an excellent dinner in a very cool seemingly underground "medieval" cafe
Our ride yesterday was good preparation for what lies ahead - long slow climbs on the Transfagarasan Highway which winds through the Carpathians and is apparently a favorite driving road for high performance sports cars.
I like the climbing. I like the transition from the smell of hay and symphony of cow bells to the scent of conifers and the sound of water bubbling downstream. I also like the physical work that comes with climbing. There's something rewarding about pushing your body and your bike in synchrony for the purpose of meeting the mountain. It's very similar to summiting a peak on foot.
I'd planned to write more about my fellow cyclists but it's late so I'll have to tell you about the East Coast Contingency in a future blog.
Another great day in a unique city.
And tomorrow we ride...
