Dictionary, it is: (a) degree or measure of succeeding (b) favorable or desired
outcome ; also : the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence. I agree with
definition (b) a favorable or desired outcome. Unfortunately, now, success is
often measure by the addition of (b) "attainment of wealth, favor, eminence
(power)" and general material gain. Also, I think we often let someone
else define our success for us - while we should truly define this ourselves.
One achievement may be a big success to one person, and a trivial achievement
would have come, easy to us?
I would like to define my success in the following way (but
this can, and most likely, will change in the future, as I grow and change as
make my own decisions, not based on fear, but following my heart?
independent, and do I add more to society than I receive?
make a difference in people's lives, either through inspiring them, kind
words, actions, thoughts, or helping them in another form?
continuing to learn, and grow as an individual?
Why am I thinking about success? I am thinking about success
because right now I think I am successful, but I wanted to deconstruct this
idea "success", before actually making such an ego-driven judgment
I'm thinking too much... we received some very good news for Futbol con Corazon,
which is a direct result of my work here, so I feel successful. Overall things
are going great here in Barranquilla. The whole team here is working very hard,
and is receptive to my suggestions. It is often frustrating, but if it were not
frustrating, then it would mean that I am accepting of a mediocre work environment.
I am making good progress on the business plan, and have helped develop a
number of grant applications. Total funds I helped bring in so far, after 1.5
months, and this is where the good news comes in, is $562,000. Total amount of
funds applied for so far ~$970,000. The latest grant application to be
approved, is worth $500,000, and will assure program continuation for 750
children for three years!! I wanted to come here to have impact, to make a
difference in people's lives, and I think this definitely qualifies. I am also
appearing on local TV, TeleCaribe, on November 4th or 5th, for a short
interview about my work here in Barranquilla, and have been asked to give a
lecture at Universidad del Norte, the best university in the city. Overall, I
have been improving the manner of work, increasing the efficiency, introducing
systems and processes, and capacity building - taking the organization to the
next level, and ensuring that things do not go back to the "old" way after I
leave. Since the executive director has been out of commission for about 2.5
weeks so far, I have also been acting executive director as well. I have also
met a bunch of great people, had really amazing (and one terrible) experience,
from which I am learning a lot. I am improving my Spanish and I am making my
decisions based on my heart, not on fear, and societal expectations.
At which point is such an evaluation just self-praise? Maybe
I should also critique the things I could do better: I could try to study more
Spanish, I could attend our internal soccer tournament every Saturday morning,
I could work more with our employees at the field (trainers, psychologists), I
could work more closely with our marketing director. There are a lot of things I could do better actually. Ok, now I feel better.
