Where I stayed
So Ive arrived In Agra a fairly inauspicious place for such a beautiful monument-well it is here in Taj Ganj-basically the backpackers district.I chose Shanti Lodge first of all but it was in great danger of falling down around me that I moved on next door to Saniya Palace-a title that conjurs up such luxury-of course Im as disappointed as the first place. This is also in need of demolition-theres basically a bed and nothing else works and the paint is peeling off the wall thinking of escaping as well. But what luck right in the middle of the night Im awoken by a huge explosion and the Saniya Palace shakes.I consider myself lucky that 1) the place did not come down around me and 2)that I was not staying next door because the rooftop kitchen and restaurant are now engulfed in flames..With kudos to the Agra Fire Dept they arrive in 10 mins and put out the fire in splendid fashion. Its funy people are wandering all over the building-no they are not fire personnel!!
So the next morning I vacate my crumbling Palace for a much better looking place-Hotel Sheela-just yards from the East Gate of the Taj.Its a wonderful spot-although I still have to order hot water by the bucket-hey whats a little inconvenience-now I just need to find someone to pour it on me as I lather up.
The Gods strike again-Im up at 6am with half the expats in this town for entry into the Taj and pass my 750 rupees over the counter feeling aggrieved since locals enter for just 20 rupees. It must have been early in the morning because Im rewarded with not one but 2 tickets-Im inwardly jumping with joy-I can see it in the morning take a snooze and go back in the evening.
There are no words to describe Shah Jahan's monument to the loss of his wife. Its literally such an awesome sight.I sit in magical peace and just try and take it all in.His grief must have been monumental. Its an absolute stunning place. It really is one of the Wonders of the World.
And so with life must come death-this small child in the last photo gave his last breath yesterday and was buried this morning.
