I''ve come to Nusa Lembongan -a tropical isle off the coast of Bali-somewhat primitive and without any cars.In retrospect not a wise decision since I cannot walk too far these days.I could however hop a lift from the swarms of flies that plague this seaweed strewn idyllic isle.So Ive turned to people watching which I find fascinating.I constantly wonder whats on their minds.
So let me set the scene. The shipwrec bar precariously perched on the edge of the beach, a tropical and clear ocean lapping at its foundations. Its a fairly non descript bar-smewhere you will find in any port of call-the only thing going for it is music by the Eagles which hums in the background over the noise of the surf edging its way up the shore and the rustling of the palm trees. So to our cast of characters. Now I had passed through on my way to the guest house a couple of hours previous and had spied a mid 50's -like myself-Australian woman nursing a chilled glass of chardonnay and beside her another cocktail which seemed to warm waiting for its patron to arrive. She's had a hard life her eyes seemingly bruised and surrounded by dark circles as if she has had no sleep for days and her skin is wrinkled with crevices and the colour of brown leather. She waits and waits and is finally rewarded-her Prince Charming arrives only to be met with an acidic look and disgust at his tardiness. So let's fast forward-its been a splendid day as I sip on a chilled beer, the condensation dripping of my hand as I watch the sun as it disappears over the horizon to awake another part of the world.Them enters our second couple -an extremely thin and heavily tatooed woman and her equally tatooed erstwhile lover both have the wasted appearance of people who have a taste for the opiate. They sit wrapped up in an animated conversation for what seems an eternity-discussing whom, what or where I have no clue. The there's the sylph like Claire who perches herself conveniently between two strapping tatooed Australians-one wonders whats on their minds and come to that also on Claires. Finally a young German couple enters my stage-they are obviously in love unable to leave each other alone for just a minute-concentrating on each other instead of their food. The mid 50's Australian couple are entwined with each other in the thows of a passionate kiss-their wrinled skins and crevices seeming to fall and gel into one.Our opiate friends also spare a brief moment for a passionate kiss in the midst of their animated conversation.
This is after all Valentine Day eve-so whats playing out in their minds does not leave alot to the imagination.
The mral of this tale as a Balinese and Czech woman both said to me earlier in the day is I don't want my man to treat me specially one day of the year.He should treat me as special every day of the year as I do him.It seems in Bali the woman thinks the same as those all ober the planet.
