Quite simply, the most beautiful beach we’ve ever seen. Soft, fine, white sand on the western side of the Bay of Bengal, whose clear, calm, turquoise waters, which darken into a midnight blue colour in the distance, lap the shore. The other side of the beach is fringed by mature palm trees, all of which hang over the beach and look as if they are reaching for the sun.

It is high season in Myanmar’s “premier beach resort” and there was nobody there. It was incredible just how peaceful it was. The main road through the village is a single-track, lined with seafood restaurants, each serving up fresh as you like fare. Every evening, just before sunset, we watched the local fisherman head out to catch squid - the lights they use to attract it dotted the horizon as the light faded. It must be one of the most romantic settings in the world and the sunsets were amazing.

This beach is as much for the locals as it is for the tourists in the resorts (which are subtly hidden between the line of palm trees). We saw a man teaching his little girl how to ride a bike (complete with stabilisers). Local school children, in their smart green and white school uniforms (another thing we love about Burma), cycled up and down the beach, played in the water or, much to our amusement, built sand stupas instead of sandcastles. And there was us thinking we’d escape stupas in Ngapali...

Most of the tourists who do visit Myanmar don’t make it this far and they are definitely missing out. If you do come to Myanmar, come to Ngapali at the end of your trip. It’s the perfect place to recharge and relax after visiting endless religious monuments. We’d come back to Myanmar just to return to this picture-perfect beach.

Ah thats a sand stupa, I thought you might have buried Lammers in the sand!

Sun, sea, white sandy beaches that stretches for miles, tranquility....sounds utter rubbish.

You know you it doesnt beat Southend on Sea!!!
