This afternoon Dave, three of Dave's hilarious roomates (Christos, Michael, and Claire), and I went down to Camden Market. That is an extraveganza of cultures! We walked through a sea of people from the tube to the market, it was packed! There were some real characters in the crowd too! There were a lot of goths; black is important as a symbol of truth, a colour which cannot be diluted. There were people with dark or sparkely curley-cues drawn in around their eyes. Crazy hair; mowhawks, bright colours, and very dramatic extensions in neon colours or black or white. There are a lot of shaved heads, some are half shaved or have chunks shaved, even girls. The clothes were very impressive as well. All different kinds of styles and combinations and the stores are huge inside, often more than two rooms. There were three Punky Fish stores in the general market vicinity. We checked out this one place for quite a while called Cyber Dog. The first room was all accessories to make you look like a cyborg or some sort of machine. There was a DJ spinning at the back of this room and a dancer on a stage. The equipment in this room was unlike anything I've ever seen; for example, a contraption to put on your hand so that it looks like the bones are glowing. All the people that worked there were completely decked out in plastic clothes, with crazy hair or no hair at all, and bright makeup. This store, and many others were in what could be described as 'tunnel rooms' that went on for over the length of a block. The Camden market used to be locks and cannals, a shipyard. It is still a huge exchange of goods. Lots of shoe stores, very funky styles. There was a lot of food too, some of it cooking right infront of you, some roasting chestnuts, dried fruits, candies, teas, fresh squeezed orange juice... Very different place but extremely interesting, we did quite a lot of people watching at lunch over tofu stirfry. I didn't buy anything but I think we might go back once more before I leave.
